Bringing the Atlas of Switzerland to the web with deck.gl

How the new web version of the Atlas of Switzerland uses deck.gl to bring its maps to the browser.

The Open Visualization Collaborator Summit is the gathering of the vis.gl community: the people who maintain deck.gl, kepler.gl and the libraries around them, and the people who build applications with them. In 2026, we at the Institute of Cartography and Geoinformation hosted it at ETH Zurich, two days on the Hönggerberg campus.

As hosts, we could also show our own work. I presented the Atlas of Switzerland, the national atlas, published by ETH Zurich since 1961, and its move from a desktop application to the web. The talk was about how the new version uses deck.gl together with MapLibre to render its thematic maps in the browser.
