Alexander Müdespacher

About

I'm a software engineer based in Zurich, building web applications and interactive maps. I care about understanding the problem, shaping the user experience, and writing the code that brings it to life.

After several years in product and technology management, I now work mainly with Vue, Astro and TypeScript, alongside MapLibre and deck.gl for geospatial applications.

At the Institute of Cartography and Geoinformation (opens in a new tab) at ETH Zurich, cartographers and engineers are building and publishing the Atlas of Switzerland (opens in a new tab), the national atlas of Switzerland. I work on its frontend: the application itself, the interactive maps, the search functionality, and how it is built and deployed. I also give lectures on Software Development in the Master's course 'Application Development in Cartography'.

For my own projects I mostly use Vue, Astro and Tailwind, and MapLibre with deck.gl for data on maps. My current project is Mica (opens in a new tab), the content editor this website runs on.

How I got here

I started at Swiss Life, where I learnt how a large company works. Then I moved to digital consulting at Namics and Open Web Technology, and later led digital product and technology teams at two startups: VIU Eyewear, which sells direct-to-consumer eyewear, and Clyde Mobility, which offers car subscriptions.

But I always wanted to write the code myself, not only manage the people who do. In 2023 I took a full-stack web development bootcamp, and a few months later I started at ETH. Until 2025 I also taught React in that same bootcamp.

AI has changed how I work, and I welcome it. I like to work where defining a product meets designing it, and with AI I can turn an idea into a working prototype quickly. Still, I want to stay in control of the code I write, so the code editor remains my main tool, not the chat window.

Outside work

I spend much of my free time in the mountains with my wife, hiking, ski touring and mountaineering, and I sometimes write about it on 46°north (opens in a new tab). Closer to home I ride my gravel bike, and we grow vegetables and flowers on a garden plot in the east of Zurich. I also like to cook and bake, and experiment with sourdough bread.
